Canadian ACT & FACT Virtual Learning Program

Recreational Respite was invited by Ontario Association for ACT and FACT and the British Columbia Assertive Community Treatment Advanced Practice to deliver a national virtual learning workshop. ACT and FACT are community-based multidisciplinary teams, who use a person-centered service delivery model to support support individuals living with significant and complex mental health, or concurrent mental health and substance use disorders. These multidisciplinary teams can include social workers, recreation specialists, occupational therapists, and other health and human service professionals, who work in as a team to flexible, individualized and assertive supports in communities throughout Canada.

Recreational Respite’s workshop “The Importance of Recreation for Social Connection and Quality of Life” was customized to include tools, strategies, and shared resources that can address the challenges of individuals with severe mental health. Our outcomes included:

  1. Participants understand the practice of therapeutic recreation and recall the impact that social health and recreation participation has on improved health and quality of life.
  2. Participants express the benefit of using recreation as a tool to aid clients in exploring identity and achieving personal goals, such as structuring time, gaining skills, improving interpersonal relationships, and living as independently as possible.
  3. Participants share and examine barriers to participation and challenges to engaging clients living with serious and persistent mental illness, with an objective of accessing strategies and resources that can be applied idn their province and the nation.

It was a pleasure to contribute to the 2023 Canadian ACT & FACT Virtual Learning Program! Read about the impact that FACT had upon one woman’s life here: “I’m moving forward with my life.”
